Takagi and colleagues (2021) played sounds from two separated speakers. When the same owner's voice appeared to move implausibly from one location to the other after a short interval, observers rated the cats as more surprised. The cats may have represented the unseen owner's location and compared it with the voice's new position.

The authors did not conclude that cats inferred the owner's entire invisible path. The evidence supports an expectation linking a familiar voice to a spatial location. Cats also use human emotional cues

Cats use scent as well as sound as social information. d'Aniello and colleagues (2023) compared cats' nostril use and behavior around samples associated with human fear, happiness, and physical odor, reporting more stress-related behavior in the fear condition.
